Puneet Kaur Johal

Sheridan College & Former International Student

Puneet is an international student graduate who came to Canada in 2018. She studied Chemical Engineering Technology program at Sheridan and was hired to work there for 2 years after graduating. During her time at Sheridan, she received

  • SSU Academic Award of Excellence (2019)

  • CSCT Silver Medal Award (2020) from the Chemical Institute of Canada

  • Wackerlin Kogut Award of Excellence in Chemical Sciences (2021)

  • Graduated as the Valedictorian


Beyond the classroom, Puneet has actively contributed to her community, leveraging her skills, expertise and lived experience to make a positive impact. 

  • She has been an active voice in expressing the challenges and concerns of international students as it relates to housing, employment, mental health and racism through open dialogues and discussions

  • She has been involved in projects with the World Education Services (WES) and Tamarack Institute’s People’s Panel to build equitable economies for newcomers and immigrants in Peel Region.

  • She emceed the signing of The Brampton Charter, aimed at improving the international student experience in Canada and especially in Brampton. She participated in the British Columbia International Education Week 2023 to speak about the Charter from the lens of a former international student.

  • Passionate about teaching and science, in her free time she tutors and mentors children and youth in STEM courses.


Puneet is going to UofT this Fall to pursue her dreams of contributing to groundbreaking research and endeavours. She wants to work for the Canadian Space Agency one day.
