Our Journey

Founded in 2013, Laadliyan began as a Facebook page where stories of gender inequity and its impacts on daughters were shared. In the beginning, our work focused on fundraising for homes for abandoned daughters in Punjab, India and raising awareness about female feticide and infanticide. Over the years, daughters in our community in the Greater Toronto Area began to express a desire for local programming and we realized how many of our sisters in the community needed our support. In 2015, Laadliyan became an incorporated non profit organization with a mission to inspire South Asian daughters of all ages to become empowered individuals through education, engagement and awareness. Since then, Laadliyan has proudly supported thousands of daughters of all ages all across the globe.

As daughters ourselves who are familiar with the impacts gender inequity can have on girls and women, we want to ensure that our sisters in the community grow up feeling wanted, confident and independent. We are determined to provide South Asian daughters with positive experiences by fostering strong relationships and alliances in our community. We have created many safe physical and digital spaces for girls and women to engage in. A core component of all of our programming is mentorship - something we wish we had growing up.

We encourage our community to celebrate daughters in all aspects of their lives and to openly have conversations on topics such as son preference, gender based violence, sexism, gender roles, sex selective abortions, menstrual hygiene, healthy relationships and much more.
