Man ally Monday: Manveer
I am an ally because I am sick and tired of the way women are treated in society. Being raised by a single mother who was also raised by a single mother, my family was full of amazing matriarchs that taught me by example that women are no less than men.
The first step to being an ally is to listen, and that’s what I try to do, because the privileges I am afforded as aman make me blind to the struggles women go through. I also try not to take up a lot of space in women’s circles. Instead, I try to make the space I occupy as a man in society one in which women are given space. If that means stepping back to let a sister be heard, so be it.
It’s important for men to be allies, because the privileges we are afforded in society give us the tools to effect change. We’ve seen how we have effected change for the negative for women, so it’s only natural that we can easily use this power and influence to balance the scales of inequity and make change for the positive. We need to be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem.
