My experience of the world has largely been paved by curiosity. It’s led me to fascinating people and places, and constantly makes me question why I can’t be, what I often can’t see. I’m blessed to have been given the space to do the work I do, first by my family who were incredibly patient as I veered further away from the life they imagined for me, and second by the many talented women I’ve connected with since who have nurtured my creativity. I’ve been working as a television, radio and digital news journalist in cities across the east cost of Australia since 2016. I cover breaking news and general rounds, with a growing interest in border security and immigration policy. For WoC, navigating the media industry can be incredibly challenging, especially when we’re just starting out, but it’s important to remember we are crucial voices in a landscape that can so often be divisive. Good journalism whether you are moved or repulsed by it, is an accurate reflection of our society, but that’s only possible if the people telling those stories have varied and extensive experiences. My hope for future South Asian leaders is that we support each other in thriving by creating spaces where we can all bloom. This requires compassion, self-reflection and awareness of our privilege
